Steelhead

Well winter steelhead fishing is in full swing. I started fishing the Umqpua the last week of November. I was able to fish until the 28th of December when the recent rains began to blow out the river. We faced some very low and clear water condtions over the last couple of weeks. These are a few of the fish we caught over the last month. Happy new year.

These are my new sidedrifting rods for this season. I have been building a bunch of rods for not just myself, but others as well. With the recent rains I have been trying to catch up on some that need to get done. I should be caught up in a few days.

Fall Salmon

Fall fishing has been great. The Umqpua has been the go to place so far this season. Some of the other rivers are starting to fish, but you don't leave fish to find fish. This is the first year in a long time that we are able to harvest wild coho. Here are a few pictures from the last couple of weeks.

Smallmouth

I had fun fishing smallmouth this summer. I worked for myself, and I also did some work for the Big K Ranch in Elkton. Fishing was good, and we caught some bigger fish this summer. As many of you know we had to sift through a bunch of smaller fish to find the bigger ones. I built six new rods that really seemed to be a perfect match for this fishery.

Sturgeon

Sturgeon fishing was a bit interesting this year. We had lots of water from all the snowpack in the Cascades. All in all we caught plenty of fish, however the keepers were not always there. We did out best. Here are a few pictures from the season.

Here are few pictures from the weekend. I was fishing on the Umpqua with Jim and Diane. Diane caught her first steelhead, and it just turned out to be a great day. We had a bunch of fun. Finally we are back on the Umqpua, and with the hold on the weather it looks like we will be there for awhile.

Antone

So here she is "Antone". We've spent 96 days together on the water. She's become a great customer, a dear friend, but most of all she's a great person. Over the years we've gotten to know one another very well, and she's become a great friend of my family. This was the trip we took on our 10 year anniversary last week. She caught three nice steelhead. Antone, thanks for being who you are. You are a great friend. I look forward to many more days on the water.

Winter Steelhead

Winter Steelhead is in full swing. Fishing has been good when we have been able to get out. Here is a picture of Loren and Clint on the Siuslaw with three nice hatchery fish. They also landed two wild fish that day. (Sorry for the poor picture, I think my camera was fogged up). The Umpqua has a bunch of fish, but high water conditions have made it tough. Look forward to great fishing after the rivers start to drop.

Fall Chinook

Here are some pictures of great days this Fall. I spent all of my time on the Siuslaw, Umpqua, and Coos rivers. Based on the size of the fish we should have another outstanding Fall Chinook fishery next year.

Fall Chinook

Fall Chinook was great this year. This is a 40lb Chinook we caught on August 20th. I went back to bouy 10 this year, I haven't fished up there in about 6 years. The Columbia is a big place, but they get a bunch of fish. The fish pictured was the biggest I caught all season. It was a great way to start the season off.

Summer fishing

This is summer fishing. Getting hang out in the boat with two great girls. Smallmouth fishing is a great time in the summer. The weather is warm, and we don't get up at 4:00 a.m. If you have kids that you want to get into fishing this is the way to do it.

Sturgeon

Sturgeon season was pretty good overall. We had to hunt hard for our fish. We got them good most days, but we did have some tough days. Astoria sturgeon fishing has been good for so many years. Finally it seems the fish are making us work a little harder, but it still is one of my favorite places to fish.

This is nice Spring Chinook on the Columbia caught in late March near St. Helens, OR. St. Helens was my home during the Columbia Spring Chinook season.

Siuslaw Steelhead

We just finished up some steelhead fishing on the Siuslaw River. Fishing was pretty good. On our best day we were 11 for 13. The river started to rise yesterday, but it looks as though we'll be able to start fishing again the first of next week.

I fished yesterday on the Siuslaw River with Craig and Mike of Portland. Craig got a new drift boat and asked if I'd teach him the ins and outs of rowing. I had a great day and got to fish myself while he rowed. We caught four steelhead. Looking forward to this week's fishing, but waiting on weather at the moment.
